The Best Thing

The best thing is to pretend you aren’t bothered
To act as though everything is okay
An oil drop that slides across feral tides
Without misshape, malformation or change

The best thing to do is carry on regardless
To live an imagined idylls where all is well
The picture of a dream no rippled by waking seams
Where the truth is always pretty without obscene

The best thing is to relinquish hope
Realising that it can always be worse
To believe in what’s known before broken soul
So protection can be provided before the undone

The best thing is to abandon all fear
Because nothing is as terrifying as the self
Walk down the road unafraid in a skip of a parade
Maybe tomorrow the best thing will be to try

The best thing to do is to protect yourself
Whether living in the lie or shadowed truth
